Right Job, Wrong Tools Part One People are not to be pressured by human means into being born-again, or hounded into advancing in the post salvation life of Biblical discipleship. The only needed and effective motivation to address spiritual issues comes from the convicting (1) and enabling presence and power of God the Holy Spirit. The part that Christian parents, God-parents, clergy, or advancing disciples are to play in the salvation or in the edification of other souls, is to communicate the accurate information that the other souls need to hear, in order for them to make an informed decision, upon reaching the age or stage of moral accountability. Trying to a good job (2) with the wrong tools can prove to be counterproductive. Some nuts have harder shells to crack than others. Every time that a soul says “No” to God, or to the things of God, he or she lays another layer of scar tissue on his or her hardening heart, until it is transformed into a heart of stone (3). As a result, some folks need to hear the cold facts in a way that is not sugar-coated (4), but I have found that in most cases, one might experience a more profitable interaction dealing with a proverbial bear by using honey, rather than a club (5). Note that even when stronger language is in order, the truth must still be communicated “with gentleness and respect” for the individual(s) involved. Otherwise, the recipient is likely to go on the defensive mode, shutting down any chance of being evangelized or edified. Sincere, but forceful, human efforts can serve to intensify the inherent Romans 8: 7 hostility towards God and the things of God, with which we all have, as members of the fallen human race. When pushed too far, such unsolicited advice can spark a Matt. 7: 6 response, and might put an end to any future opportunities that one might have otherwise been given, to reach out to the same individual(s). The key word here is “unsolicited.” Unbelievers, in need of salvation are more open to receive the Gospel Message, and believers are more open to receive edifying Bible Doctrine, when it is THEY do the asking, rather than have it forced upon them. Biblically trained and ordained pastor-teachers, are there to teach the unvarnished Word of God. By attending worship services, tuning in by radio, or connecting by way of the Internet or other means of communication, listeners have asked to hear what the pastor-teachers have to say. As it was with Jesus, if the pastor-teachers are doing their job, there will be times that what they have to say will be a source of inspiration, comfort, and reassurance, whereas at other times, what they have to say will be upsetting and challenging. As long as we are on this side of Heaven, we all are a continuing work in progress, and therefore are in need of both ongoing encouragement and edification. Pastor-teachers who “tell it like it is” are accustomed to findings themselves in the proverbial pent house apartment one day, and in the dog house the next. Even a negative response tells them that the congregation was listening. Many Church goers go to or say with a local assembly for all the wrong reasons, such as convenience, socialization, family tradition, personal recognition or position, and entertainment. As a result, such Church-goers are no further along the road to spiritual maturity than they were six months, six years, or sixty years ago. Spiritual maturity is measured by the amount of accurate Bible doctrine that any individual, born-again believer has circulating in his edified soul structure, and the consistency with which he or she applies it, to all that he or she thinks, says, or does. Such Church-goers are like someone who walks around the same city block once a week. They go through the same motions, chat with the same people, but experiences no advancement or increase in the intimacy of their personal walk with the Lord. If, in these day of the Great Apostasy spoken of in 1Timothy 4:1, you find yourself in, or connected with, a local assembly that continues to feed your soul with the information you need to hear, then thank God for it! By all means, give it your time, talents, and treasure. On the other hand, if you never feel challenged or feel that you have “heard it all before,” it might be time to move on to a pulpit or a source of edification that can satisfy your spiritual needs. There are no red lights, U-turn lanes, or rotaries along the road to spiritual maturity. You are either moving along towards your spiritual destination, or you are off to the side in the beak down lane, in need of attention or assistance. This assistance may include a 2Cor. 13: 5 “x-ray” of your soul structure to determine if there is anything there that has taken root and needs to be removed. For an advancing disciple, enough (Bible Doctrine) is never enough. There will always be the need to reinforce what he or she has already learned, or the need to learn something new. The pursuit of the truth and its application becomes the primary Phil. 1: 21 force behind one’s daily activity, needing no encouragement or pressure from anyone to continue. The primary reason that one should select his or her chosen pulpit or source of spiritual edification is for the edification of his or her Matt. 7: 24 soul structure “For as he thinks within himself, so he is…(Proverbs 23: 7 NASB2020).” Our overt behavior, good or bad, is the result of thoughts and mental attitudes we have in our soul structure. Therefore, God is not the only one that desires to influence our soul structure. Be it the unadulterated Gospel Message for salvation, or accurate Bible doctrine for edification, the devil has a warehouse full of alternatives that he works long and hard to deliver. He does so through people, some who hold positions of religious leadership, who he has deceived and have become the blind leading the blind (7). Being sincere is of no help to oneself or to others when one is sincerely wrong. Most Church-goers assume that the person behind their chosen pulpit or source of edification is communicating accurate information and accompanying activity. This assumption plays right into the devil’s hand. Like a submarine, it is in a position to do the most damage when its presence remains undetected. Scripture (8) makes it clear that false teachings and accompanying activities have been an issue WITHIN the Christian Community since the very beginning of the Church Age, and will only increase as the Church Age comes to its end. Without a Biblically-sound soul structure, humans are easy targets for deception in the spiritual realm. It’s only by knowing the truth that one can identify and address an incoming missile from the Kingdom of darkness. Once a false doctrine and accompanying activity has been planted and practiced long enough, it is very hard to uproot, resulting in the denominational differences that are the work of Man, and has the support of the devil.
